Daddy Is My Hero Cover

There will be plenty of children, and adults for that matter, that consider their dads as heroes.

The relationship between father and child is one that is beautifully celebrated in Daddy Is My Hero.  This particular book is about a relationship between a father and a pre-school son, but doesn't mean that little girls won't relate to it.

It follows the adventures, and the chores, of a dad busied with entertaining and looking after their young son.

This is a tender, touching tribute to all heroic dads out there, full of fun, energy and love for their children.

Daddy Is My Hero is written by Dawn Richards, who is also the author behind Mummy Duck, I Love You and Little Duck's First Christmas.

The illustrations are provided by Jane Massey whose previous works include Let's Play Peek-a-boo!, Knight School and Monster Baby.

Daddy Is My Hero is published by Random House in both boardback and paperback formats, both retailing for £5.99

Daddy Is My Hero (sometimes!)

WHAT THE PARENT THOUGHT

As the father of an energetic and imaginative boy, I am proper target audience for this book.

It's written from the child's perspective, which is very interesting, as it makes you think a little more about how your child sees you.  Sometimes it's good to look at things from a child's perspective and understand why they think you are a hero for dressing up as a wizard or a pirate.

There's a lot in here for an active imagination, and it takes me back to my boy's tender years, when he'd like nothing more than a 'made up story' at bedtime.

Despite loving some of the books we'd share at night, his favourite was always for me to make up a daft story that could range from Chewbacca going to the dentist, to the tales of a little boy who'd had remarkable coincidental recent experiences to my boy!

I'm not ashamed to admit that reading this simple and cute book brought a tear or two to my eye, and I'm sure it would be a bedtime reading hit between any father and toddler son.

WHAT THE TEACHER THOUGHT

Helen is an assistant head teacher at a large primary school, with specific responsibility for over 150 children in the Early Years Foundation Stage.  She has nearly two decades' worth of experience of working with children up to 6 years old.

Below she tells us what she made of Daddy Is My Hero and includes her ideas of how the book could be used as an education tool.

"The illustrations are superb, simple, clear yet intriguing at the same time.  Children could try to copy them, or they could be used for simple counting and finding tasks."

"Having simple text that rhymes is also good for young children, and teachers for that matter.  It gives us an opportunity to explain sounds and easily prompts children to think of other rhyming words."

"This book would be great to talk about a range of feelings.  How a child may feel calm, safe, happy and protected."

"There's a great mix of reality and fantasy.  It isn't all pirates and spacemen, but cleaning teeth and washing up too.  It's good to find a book that features a father doing housework."

"It also tackles conflict well, and that children do not always agree with their parents.  It's good to see that as normal, and to talk about how conflict is resolved."

"Parents can use this book to talk to children about always loving them, despite a child not always perhaps being in the good books!"
