FTH SB_Cover front

Together with illustrator Lauren Beard, Abie Longstaff has created a series of modern children stories based on classic fairytales.

The latest in this series is The Fairytale Hairdresser and Sleeping Beauty.

Other books in the series, based on the classic stories of Cinderella, Snow White and Rapunzel have been children's book best sellers.

The stories bring absolutely classic and treasured stories right into the modern age, with a hairdresser, Kitty Lacey, now amongst the heart of the story telling.

Lulu has even got in on the act, choosing a Fairytale Hairdresser book to read on Cbeebies Bedtime Stories.

All you need to do to enter is give to tell us who you think would be the perfect person to wake you up from a deep sleep?

But before you give yourself a great chance of winning a copy of the book have a read of what we made of The Fairytale Hairdresser and Sleeping Beauty.

WHAT THE PARENT THOUGHT

I'm not sure we have such a sparkly and pretty book on our Tidy Books bookcase.  The Fairytale Hairdresser and Sleeping Beauty is very much a pretty affair, it uses lovely pastel colours, and raised glitter effects in certain places, but that doesn't mean it is all 'airy fairy' if you'll pardon the pun.

The story is obviously centred on the classic tale of Sleeping Beauty.  Falling asleep at the prick of her finger, to be woken by the true love of her prince.  All very delicate and whimsical for fans of prince and princesses tales.  Basing the story telling on a hairdresser gives the book a modern twist, and perhaps makes it much easier for a child to relate to.

Knowing the Dear Zoo story helps with this book, and it probably works best as an accompaniment rather than as a stand alone children's book.  The text and illustrations are still charming, and the book encourages children to interact with them, as well as perhaps prompting the reader to think a little more of pets and animals away from the book.

The illustrations are brilliant, but the text is also great.  Perhaps a little more challenging than you may expect, but very helpful to expand a child's vocabulary and add emphasis to the story. The 'enchanted thicket', and 'ferocious weeds', are a couple of my favourite expressions from the book.

WHAT THE TEACHER THOUGHT

Helen is an early years foundation stage leader. She’s responsible for the education of over 150 three to six year-olds. Helen has over a decade’s experience in early years learning, and this is what she thinks of The Fairytale Hairdresser and Sleeping Beauty.

“This book provides a great opportunity for children to hunt and spot fairytale characters”

“As it's based on a tale that lots of children will know, they will be able to anticipate what happens next in the story, and find relating to it much easier.”

“I love the glitter, and the way it is used amongst the beautiful illustrations.  They encouraged me to read the story, rather than get distracted by them, and I think it would be the same for children.”

“The language used in perhaps aiming at the 5+ age bracket, and I guess they would feel quite grown up reading it.  However it would definitely be a good story to have for shared reading with smaller children, again perhaps - when used with a group - getting children to spot characters and guessing what will happen next.”

So that's what we made of The Fairytale Hairdresser and Sleeping Beauty and we have three brand new copies of it to giveaway.
