Anthony Browne is one of those immensely talented individuals that can not only tell stories beautifully and in a way children love, but he can also illustrate them too.
What If...? Is his latest offering as both author and illustrator.
Browne is an incredible popular and well known children's book author, sandwiched between Michael Rosen and Julia Donaldson in his stint as a former children's laureate, he is in esteemed company.
This latest picture book is an enchanting tale of a young boy being nervous about going to his first big party.
His imagination runs wild as he and his mum search for the right place, and find themselves peering in on the worlds of various households as they try to find the party venue.
Surprising discoveries are made on their way as they look through many front windows in their quest to find the right place for the party.
All you need to do to be in with a chance of winning a copy of the book, is to tell us where you think is the best place for a party?
But before you give yourself a great chance of winning a copy of the book have a read of what we made of What If....? by Anthony Browne.
WHAT THE PARENT THOUGHT
I had a good look on our Tidy Books bookcase for another of Anthony Browne's titles. We are only too aware of some of the fantastic books he's written and illustrated.
My son has always been quite fond of monkeys, and Browne's inclination to often include gorillas in his books has previously gone down well here.
However I think we must have stored away all the books we had (replacing them with the Wimpy Kid rubbish), and I did begin to wonder if my 8-year-old may turn his nose up at this picture book.
Hopefully the picture above illustrates how wrong I was, as my son was transfixed. He loved the story, and he enjoyed putting his own spin on the looking into the windows of the various houses on the street with the party on.
It's a tale I guess a lot of us parents can relate to, a child going off to their first big party, the first time we leave them alone. And it's also true - I count myself among them - that sometimes party venues are not all that straightforward to find!
The book is well timed, as it's set at a time of the year when it's darker earlier in the evening, and there was a warmth to the book because of it.
There's also some of that as it is lovingly reassuring for a child. That despite worry, and the world sometimes coming across a little sinister, the people amongst it are interesting and there is joy and relative happiness in most homes.
A great book if your child is a little nervous about going solo themselves to a party for the first time.
WHAT THE TEACHER THOUGHT
Helen is an early years foundation stage leader. She’s responsible for the education of over 150 three to six year-olds. Helen has over a decade’s experience in early years learning, and this is what she thinks of What If....? by Anthony Browne.
“This is a reassuring story for children that little bit extra independence”
“Right from the off, the opening is a great prompt for encouraging children to talk about their anxieties and worries.”
“It shows that it's totally normal to have fears, and that even adults and parents have them too.”
“I like how detailed the illustrations are, mixing very realistic drawings with cartoon-like characters. What's great is the main characters facial expression is very clear, and would be a great means of asking children how they think he feels at each part of the story.”
"My favourite page is the opening door, which has a little clue to what may be behind it. Again a perfect opportunity to engage children in predicting what may happen next."
So that's what we made of What If....? by Anthony Browne and we have three brand new copies of it to giveaway.
