Stuart Reid is an extremely hardworking children's book author. Since embarking on a mammoth school visiting tour towards the end of 2011, Stuart has read to over 60,000 children in more than 250 schools. He will have been reading to them from his own Gorgeous George series of books. These illustrated novel books are aimed at the 9+ age group, and will appeal to reader's with an appreciation of bottom humour and those that find things so crude and vulgar they're funny.
This book, as like the others in the series, is illustrated by the immensely talented Calvin Innes. Calvin is actually the mastermind of the publishing house that these books belong to. My Little Big Town aims to produce books that children really want to read, rather than ones that parents would like them to. We've featured books from Calvin Innes before, who has his own Twisted Tale series.
This latest Stuart Reid book, Gorgeous George and the Unidentified Unsinkable Underpants Part 1, is a tale of mystery inspired by the Loch Ness monster. George and his chums set off on an adventure that calls for the help of his Grandpa's new secret invention, whoopee cushion underpants! They need to solve the mystery of vanishing water, why everything smells of wee and also spend a decent amount of their time trying to avoid eating rabbit poo.
Do you believe in the Loch Ness monster? Can you offer a description? All you need to do to be in with a chance of winning a copy of the book, is to tell us about your idea for what Nessie may look like?
But before you give yourself a great chance of winning a copy of the book have a read of what we made of Gorgeous George and the Unidentified Unsinkable Underpants Part 1 by Stuart Reid.
WHAT THE PARENT THOUGHT
My son absolutely loves the Twisted Tale series of books from Calvin Innes, so we were very much looking forward to getting stuck in to this Gorgeous George book by Stuart Reid.
As a nearly 9-year-old I think my boy is perfect target audience, and this was a great book for us to share the reading. My son loved hearing me read parts of it (especially the vulgar ones) but it's also one he can confidently read out loud too.
However I've also caught him reading it alone, the laughter coming from his room after lights out gave the game away!
The humour in this book is definitely there to appeal to the younger mind, not that at 37 years-young I am at all above laughing at a bogie fight or wee soaked soil, but it isn't for the feint hearted and I winced a little reading some parts of it.
But that's the aim of the author and publisher with these books. To have stories that really, really appeal to the young reader rather than us parents often all too eager to advise our children what's best for them to read. They have absolutely nailed that ethos here, while at the same time not creating a series of books I wouldn't want my child to read.
My child - like me - loves the illustrations, but I think his only criticism is that he'd like them to appear a tiny bit more often in certain sections of the book. But I'm almost certain that will change with his age, and having a little too few, rather than too many, is a good way to motivate children to read on until they get to the next one, which is only ever a page or two away anyway.
We have THREE copies of this Gorgeous George book to giveaway. All you have to be in with a chance of winning one is to tell us what you think the Loch Ness monster could look like? Leave a comment with your 'Nessie' description below to enter our giveaway.
