WIN!!! the brand new book "Big!" by Tim Hopgood

WIN!!! A copy of Big! The brand new book from Tim Hopgood.  A colourful addition to your children's bookcase with Tidy Book's book review and competition.

You can win your child a copy of Big! Tim Hopgood’s latest children’s book. There are 5 copies to win!!

This wonderfully illustrated story follows a little boy who keeps asking questions: When will I big? It’s refreshingly simply and Tim Hopgood’s illustrations bring this little boy to life as he compares himself to all sorts of wonderful creatures.

All you need to do to enter is tell us what animal you’d like to be as big as and why?

But before you give yourself a great chance to win a brand new illustrated children’s book have a read of what we made of it.

For a father that has read to his son forever this book would certainly have had its time and place with us.

It’s beautifully simply, and its pastel colours and illustrations are cute and gently intriguing on the eye.  His use and choice of colour are skills I can only envy, and especially wish I had when picking from Dulux colour charts for my walls.

I’m sure many people – parents and children – can relate to the question of: When will I be big?  I’m sure I’ve been asked it a million times as a parent, and I’m almost as certain that I asked it a million and one times as a child.

The story is about a boy comparing himself to animals - and includes his dad - wondering when he can consider himself ‘big’ but I don’t think it’s a feeling that’s exclusive to men and that girls and mums would enjoy the book too. Its text is refreshing and will expand a child's vocab, where more than one word can be used to express a similar thing.  It is great to read to a young child, as well as encouraging the emerging reader to have a go themselves.

Helen is an early years foundation stage leader. She’s responsible for the education of over 150 three to six-year-olds. Helen has over a decade’s experience in early years learning, and this is what she thinks of Big! By Tim Hopgood.

“This book would be incredibly easy to use in an educational sense.  It’s perfect for helping kids to understand the use of language in sizing”

“Important words are given emphasis with bold or capitalised text, and that would help learning and also as clear prompts for more dramatic story telling.”

“I would also happily consider using this book on a class topic of growing.  When we need to enable a dialogue with the children on how things grow and how we can help that.”

“It may be easier for boys to empathise with, given the main character is a boy and it features his dad, but that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t recommend reading it with girls.”

“Tim Hopgood has the knack of talking in a language that children understand, and want to think.  The boy saying he is about ‘500 popcorns tall’ is a very good example of that.  Much better than the cold and uniform measurements we tend to use as adults!”

“I’d look to use the book with children in reception class and younger.”

So that's what we made of it, and we have a copy to giveaway.

To be in with a chance to win a copy of Big! by Tim Hopgood, simply leave a comment telling us what creature you’d like to be as big as and why.

hmm. My first thought was an elephant, but I wouldn't be able to get into shops and the theatre, so then I thought why not be something the size of a dragonfly? And if I were a dragonfly, just for a day (they live for about 6 to 12 weeks once they have their wings) I would flutter about and land on people, as they know instinctively who would appreciate them and not hurt them :)
